When to seek help
Seek immediate medical help if you find it difficult to breathe, speak or swallow, have substantial swelling inside your mouth, or develop eye or vision problems. Do not wait for a reply to a message.
Contact a dentist as soon as possible if pain is severe, getting worse or not starting to ease, if swelling, fever or feeling unwell develops, or if previous symptoms return. Also report a lost temporary filling or the feeling that the treated tooth meets the opposing tooth before the others.
For mild soreness that is improving, follow your individual instructions and keep your scheduled review. If you are unsure about your recovery, ask your treating dentist.
How long can pain last after root canal treatment?
The tooth may remain sensitive for the first few days. The duration depends on its initial condition and the extent of treatment. Recovery may sometimes take longer after complex treatment. A rule such as “everything is normal until day seven” cannot assess an individual situation.
Track changes: whether chewing is becoming easier, pain is occurring less often, and whether swelling or fever has appeared. If things get worse, do not postpone contacting your dentist until a particular day.
Why does biting hurt if the pulp has been removed?
Treatment takes place inside the tooth, but living tissues around it can react to the procedure. Removing the pulp does not mean that every sensation around the tooth must disappear immediately.
Tell your dentist if the tooth feels “higher” than its neighbours or stops your teeth meeting normally. This symptom calls for a bite check. Do not try to file down the filling yourself or assume that painful contact will necessarily go away on its own.
If the tooth has a temporary filling
Treatment may not yet be complete between visits. A temporary seal does not replace the final restoration. Keep the agreed date for your next visit and ask how to protect the tooth until then.
Contact the clinic if the temporary filling comes out or the restoration is damaged. Do not try to seal or repair the cavity yourself.
Pain returns a month or more later
Pain that appears after a symptom-free period should be assessed again. You cannot determine the cause or the need for retreatment yourself. Your dentist will consider your symptoms, previous treatment and examination findings. Retreatment is possible in some cases, but it is not the automatic answer to every episode of pain.
What to do before your examination
While the anaesthetic is still working, follow the eating instructions you were given. Until the final restoration is in place, protect the tooth from excessive chewing forces and continue gentle oral hygiene.
Choose pain relief according to your dentist’s advice, contraindications and the medicine’s instructions. Do not exceed the dose or combine products containing the same active ingredient. Tell your dentist if the recommended medicine does not help.
Do not start antibiotics on your own. For many causes of dental pain, they do not replace dental treatment; a clinician decides whether they are indicated.
What to tell the clinic
Have the treatment date and stage ready, along with details of any temporary or permanent filling, a description of the pain and how it has changed. Specifically mention swelling, fever, difficulty opening your mouth and any medicines you take. Say if the tooth was treated at another clinic, and bring available X-rays and treatment instructions. This helps organise an assessment; a diagnosis cannot be established through messages.
Questions and answers
Does pain after treatment mean the dentist made a mistake?
Not necessarily. Temporary soreness can follow a procedure. But the sensation alone cannot confirm normal healing or identify the cause of a complication.
Can I wait a week if the pain is getting worse?
Do not rely only on the calendar. Increasing pain and new symptoms should be discussed with a dentist sooner.
Do the root canals always need retreatment?
No. The next step depends on the cause of the symptoms and an assessment of the tooth.
