What professional hygiene does
Hygiene aims to remove deposits; tartar needs professional removal.
Mechanical cleaning may reduce surface staining, for example from pigmented drinks. Removing surface stains and changing the internal colour of a tooth are different aims.
If it has been a long time since your last examination, start by explaining what concerns you: plaque, stains or the overall shade. You do not need to choose a procedure name in advance.
What whitening changes
Whitening uses products that affect the colour of natural teeth. Different approaches are available, and the degree of change depends partly on the cause of discolouration.
Before whitening, a dentist should assess your teeth and gums and discuss whether the procedure is suitable. Tooth sensitivity and tissue irritation are possible.
At the consultation, describe a realistic goal: which shade concerns you, whether you have sensitivity and your previous experience. A promise of a specific number of shades without assessment does not help establish your result.
If you have fillings, veneers or crowns
Whitening products do not change the colour of fillings, veneers and crowns in the same way as natural teeth. After your teeth change shade, differences from restorations may become more noticeable.
Show the dentist the areas visible when you smile and ask how they affect the overall appearance. Do not plan to replace restorations yourself: first discuss whether replacement is needed at all and how it relates to your goal.
How to discuss the sequence
Ask what caused the colour change and which options apply. Then clarify whether preparation is needed and how the result will be assessed. Hygiene does not have to be the answer to every shade concern, and whitening does not replace necessary care for teeth and gums.
If whitening is suitable, ask about the approach, instructions, sensitivity and follow-up. Clarify the system, duration and cost from the plan actually being proposed, rather than borrowing them from someone else's advertisement.
How to avoid unrealistic expectations
Compare not only an “after” photograph but also the explanation of the starting situation. Lighting may differ in a photograph, and it does not show which method suits you. Do not treat another patient's result as a promise of your own.
If you are considering a home product, discuss it with a dentist before using it. Recipes involving acids and abrasive mixtures should not be treated as a safe substitute for a professionally chosen approach.
Questions and answers
Do hygiene and whitening produce the same result?
No. Removing deposits and surface staining differs from chemically changing the colour of natural teeth.
Will whitening lighten crowns and fillings?
No. Such restorations do not change colour in the same way as natural teeth. This needs to be considered when planning.
Can sensitivity occur?
Yes. Tooth sensitivity and tissue irritation are possible unwanted effects. Discuss the risks and instructions before starting.
